I am afraid that once I make a commitment to a partner, I will lose my freedom or identity. Possible reasons you responded this way include negative motivations and positive motivations. On the negative side, it could mean that you are not truly committed to your partner, that you are selfish and self centered or that you have unrealistic expectations. On the positive side, it could mean that you have a healthy degree of individuality and independence or that you have a good understanding of your fears.
In AA we do a moral inventory and look at all the ways that we are self centered and self seeking. The prayer that was glued to my graduation cap says “relieve me of the bondage of self”.
